MEXT scholarship has two ways to apply: Embassy Track and University Track. The Embassy Track deadline in Pakistan is already closed for this year. So now you can only apply through the University Track. In this track, you don't apply to MEXT directly. You apply through a Japanese university. The university checks your application, and if they like you, they send your name to MEXT. There is no fee, and IELTS is not required by MEXT. Each university has its own deadline, so you must check this on the university's own website. Here is the process in simple steps. How to apply. Step 1: Apply on the University's Portal This is where you apply — directly on that university's own website or portal. There is no separate MEXT website for you to use. Each university has its own system, so check the exact instructions on their page. You will: Make an account (if needed) Fill the application form Upload your documents Step2: Upload Your Documents Common documents needed: Application form Transcripts and degree certificates (attested) Research proposal Recommendation letter Passport copy Health certificate Professor's Letter of Acceptance Photo Step 3: Submit Before the Deadline Submit everything before that university's deadline. Take a screenshot of your confirmation. Late submissions are not accepted. Step 9: University Reviews You The university checks your application. They may also do an online interview. This can take a few weeks to a few months. Step 10: University Sends Your Name to MEXT If the university chooses you, they send your name to MEXT themselves. You don't do this part it happens between the university and MEXT directly. Step 4: MEXT Final Check MEXT does a final review of the names sent by the university. Since the university already checked you, this step is mostly a formality. Step 5: Result Results usually come around February–March the following year. The university will tell you the result. Step 6: Visa and Travel If selected, the university helps you get a Certificate of Eligibility. You take this to the Japanese Embassy in Pakistan for your student visa. Then you travel to Japan for your program (April or October intake). Important Points to Remember You apply only through the university's website — there is no separate MEXT portal for you. No application fee. No IELTS required by MEXT. Each university has a different deadline — check this yourself. Try multiple universities and professors at the same time — don't wait for just one. The professor's Letter of Acceptance is very important, even when it's optional.
